Care Guide

Jewellery is often both a financial investment and holds sentimental value for the wearer. Due to this, it's important to ensure your jewellery is cleaned and cared for so it will last for years to come. Whether you want to restore shine to your favourite silver ring, or ensure the plating lasts on your new gold bracelet, our guide will keep you covered.

What is sterling silver?

Serge DeNimes jewellery is made from Sterling Silver, which is made up of 92.5% Silver and 7.5% other metals. Pure Silver is impractical as it is too soft to shape and wear, making Sterling Silver the highest quality Silver used in jewellery.

General Care for silver jewellery

All metals naturally oxidise over time, especially Sterling Silver due to its composition. See below for general care information on how to best look after your jewellery.

  • Store in it's Serge DeNimes pouch or a jewellery box, separate from other items
  • Avoid contact with chemicals such as household cleaners, perfume, moisturisers etc.
  • Remove jewellery before showering, swimming, exercising and sleeping
  • Avoid getting your jewellery wet. Dry it thoroughly if it comes into contact with water
Care for Silver Jewellery

Sterling Silver naturally tarnishes overtime as the 7.5% other metals, such as Copper, react to the air. Perfumes, hair spray, hand gel, perspiration etc, accelerate tarnishing, so here are some tips to keep your products in great condition:

  • Polish with a jewellery cloth specifically designed for Silver jewellery, such as your Serge DeNimes cleaning cloth (only applicable for dark silver /oxidised pieces)
  • It is not impossible for Silver jewellery to turn your skin green. This is the metal (usually Copper) reacting with the pH on your skin which turns the skin green. To avoid this, keep your skin and jewellery dry and clean the jewellery often
  • See 'General Care for Jewellery' for more information
Care for Plated Jewellery

Plated jewellery will eventually fade or lose colour due to natural wear. How long the plating lasts depends on factors such as how often the product is worn, and how it is cared for. Plated jewellery includes Gold and Rhodium plated styles.

  • Clean with specialist cleaner
  • See 'General Care for Jewellery' for more information
Care for Resizable Jewellery

Our resizable jewellery items are left open so they can be opened or closed to fit. Silver is a very soft metal so when doing this be very gentle and avoid repeating too often as the material will wear down and may crack / break.
