The Creative Journey: Piers James on Music, Style, and Supporting Creatives

Hey, I'm Piers James. I'm a musician, an entrepreneur, and a creative living in London now, but I originally hail from Ipswich. I've been blessed to be able to explore my passions in music and fashion while also doing something close to my heart—helping other creatives through Bata Collective, a community dedicated to mental health and well-being in the arts.

Who Am I?

If I had to describe myself in three words, I'd say I'm Multifaceted, Creative, and Entrepreneurial. I wear many hats, but each one feeds into the other. Whether through my music, style, or the businesses I run, I'm constantly pushing to create something authentic that reflects who I am.

My style In three words

Can't Be Replicated. Fashion is personal, and I don't look to others to define what works for me. My biggest style icon? That's easy—me. I think everyone should be their style icon. You've got to wear your personality, not just the clothes.

Favourite Fashion Piece
Right now, my favourite piece in my wardrobe is this custom Martine Rose jacket. I love it when fashion tells a story, and that jacket says a lot about my vibe and who I am as an artist. When did you start acting?

The Power Of Jewellery

For me, jewellery is an extension of who I am. It's not just an accessory—it's like putting on pieces of my identity. I'm selective with what I wear. I don't just throw on any piece. My jewellery tends to be unique, either things that hold sentimental value because they were gifted by family or friends or items that catch my eye because they are different.

On a recent shoot, I wore a pearl necklace that stood out to me. There's something about mixing classic, refined pieces with streetwear that I love. It's all about balance, and the pearls gave that vibe.

Music was always in my blood

Music has always been a big part of my life. Growing up in a musical household, I was constantly surrounded by artists, DJs, and producers. So, in a way, my path as an artist was almost predestined. But it wasn't until I finished university, around 21, that I understood this was the path I wanted to pursue fully. I'd been experimenting and creating all along, but around that time, I realized that what I had to say—my sound, my perspective—was different from what was out there. It felt like my time.

My Sound: New Age Nostalgia
I'd describe my sound as "New Age Nostalgia." It's rooted in the classics—hip Hop, R&B, and Soul—but with a fresh, modern twist. I don't like to box myself in, though. Over the years, I've realized I can create in any genre I want, but those three are the foundation of my music.

When I create, my process starts with the music. The sounds are already there like they've written themselves. My job is just to articulate what the sounds are saying. From there, the lyrics and the message come naturally.

One of my favourite songs I've written? Truthfully, it's not out yet, but if I had to choose one that's released, I'd say These Nights. There's something about that track that encapsulates a lot of my experiences and emotions

Bringing Visions to Life: Music Videos

One of the most exciting parts of being an artist is seeing your ideas and creative visions come to life. On a music video set, so much pre-production and planning go into each shot—lighting, locations, outfits, and the whole aesthetic. But when it all comes together, it's like magic. That feeling of seeing something you dreamed up in your mind becoming a tangible, visual reality? It's unmatched.

Dream Collaborations and Favourite Performances

I get asked a lot about who I'd love to collaborate with, and if I could pick anyone, it'd be Michael Jackson. Can you imagine being in the studio with the King of Pop, trying to understand his creative process? That would've been incredible.

When it comes to live performances, I've been inspired by many, but one that stands out is Kendrick Lamar on his "Mr. Morale" tour. I caught his show at the O2, and it was mind-blowing. As an artist, seeing someone execute their vision with such precision and power—it's just something else.

Favourite Cities and Musical Influences

I've been lucky to perform in some fantastic places, but one that holds a special place in my heart is Tel Aviv. The energy was electric, and it's a place that surprised me with its vibrant creative scene. Despite what's going on politically, the city has a solid connection to art and music, and I felt that deeply when I was there.

Regarding what I'm listening to right now, my rotation includes Leon Thomas, Isaiah Falls, and Laila. And if we're talking about albums that have shaped me, I've got to give it up for Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly". That album is a masterpiece. But the other two that pushed me to make music were Pharrell's "In My Mind" and Kanye's "The College Dropout."

What's Next? Big Plans and Bata Collective

I have some exciting projects I can't wait to share with everyone. From new music to other creative ventures, I've been in the studio cooking up something special. But for now, I'm keeping the details under wraps.

One project I am open to discussing is Bata Collective. I started Bata because I saw a real need in the creative industry. Whether you're an up-and-coming artist or already established, the pressure can be overwhelming. Burnout, anxiety, and even serious issues like depression and suicide are unfortunately too common.

With Bata, the mission is to support creative professionals, especially with their mental health and well-being. The industry can be brutal and not always inclusive—whether you're struggling to make connections or just trying to maintain your success. I want to create a space where people can feel supported and have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive. It's about ensuring everyone has access to opportunities that allow them to succeed regardless of their background.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, my goal—whether through my music, fashion, or work with Bata—is to ensure that people feel connected, uplifted, and appreciated. I want to use my platform to share my experiences and help others find their way. It's all about leaving a positive impact, and I'm just getting started.
